Start your engines...

The year 2011 is here and so is the new series of the Pipe King Southern Cross Rally Series. This year is shaping up to be one of the best for AMSAG, with 6 rounds being run, it will surely be a test of man and machine.

The Cowra Shire Rally will be run on the fast and smooth shire roads to the west & south west of Cowra. This year the stages have been revised with the faster “straightline” stages removed, more use of the forest stages and a new 11Km stage has been added. The event is enthusiastically supported by the local council, so try to get out and show our support to this great town. The event is supported with open arms by the local council, so try to get out and show our support to this great town. Supp regs for this event will be out shortly so watch this space!

Round 2 will be the Oberon Rally, moving to an earlier timeslot then its usual October date, the Oberon Rally will be run on 30th April. The event director Dave Aitchson doesn’t believe the change in date will deter the record fields seen at the event over the last few years and has added “We’ve managed to find some awesome stages this year, by redirecting some stages we have hopefully made it easier on crews with the distances they need to travel between services, and also found some super sweet roads that haven’t been used for a few years and are in fantastic condition”.

Round 3 will be the Forbes Shire Rally to be held on 18th June. After a last minute cancellation last year due to issues with council, the 2011 event is hoping to make a huge impact on this year’s series. With the area being devastated by floods over late November and early December 2010, there were some concerns over what effect there would be on the roads in the area, particularly in the Eugowra area which was hit worst by the floods. After a course check was carried out on the weekend of 29 & 30th January, event director Peter Crich is glad to say the roads have held up quite well. “only a small section of roads have been affected by the flood waters, we will be in contact with the council to confirm that these will be fixed in time for the event and are confident of still being able to provide a quality event for competitors” advised Peter. The Forbes Shire Rally differs from the Cowra Shire event in that whilst the roads are still smooth and reasonably fast as a result, the profile of the land is a lot more undulating then the Cowra area, making for more exciting driving.

Round 4 will be the new South Coast Rally to be held in and around Batemans Bay on the idyllic south coast of NSW. Event director Colin Fletcher completed a course check recently and advised “the roads down there are amazing, we have found some roads that haven’t been run on for some years, this will be a real treat for competitors”. Colin went on to add “we are aiming to bring the rallying to the locals with the event having a central service in town, and easily accessible spectator points to help maximise the exposure of this great event to the fantastic locals in Batemans Bay”. The event will be run as round 3 of the 2WD Masters Series which will be sure to add an extra challenge for the regular AMSAG competitors.

Round 5 will be the Cowra Forest Rally, run over two days on the weekend of 17 & 18th September on the Shire Roads to the north of Cowra as well as the regular stages in Pennsylvania State Forest. This year’s event promises the same endurance aspect with a similar layout to previous years, however with the forest roads being graded recently, the roads should be smoother then in years gone by. This is a popular event with a lot of competitors, and the two day format makes for a challenge for both man and machine to see who can last the distance.

The final round for 2011 will be the Jenolan Rally to be held on 22nd October. Affectionately known as “Batty’s Rally”, the Jenolan Rally has had large success as the traditional season opener. Event director Peter “Batty” Batt will be hoping for the same success even with the new date. “I don’t think a change of date will affect the entry numbers to much this year, we’ve seen in recent years that events in October can still have high entry numbers, you just need to look at the Oberon Rally run just over the hill from where this event will run to see that late year events can still be great events” advised Batty. “I’ll still be looking forward to seeing the smiling faces back at the Hampton Pub after this event, we’re still looking at keeping this social aspect of the event there” he added. With the popular central service at the Old Men’s Camp just off Jenolan Caves Road, the event should again be just as well run as always with Batty at the helm.

Rally Action to hit Cowra Shire again in 2011!

The 2011 Cowra Shire Rally is revving up to be a fantastic opening round of the 2011 Pipe King Southern Cross Rally Series. The event to be run on the Shire Roads to the South West and West of the Western NSW town of Cowra will be held on the 12th March.

With just over 150Km’s of competitive driving, this years event has been revised from last year after feedback from competitors, with several stages being removed altogether to avoid the “flat out straightline stages” last year.

After completing a course check on the weekend of 29 & 30th January, Event Checker Brent Twaddle has advised, “whilst the stages are still fast, this is inevitable due to the smooth nature of Shire Roads, however with the change instages, with some being scrapped all together and other new ones being added, I believe this years event will be a vast improvement over last year”. There will still be some similarities with last years event, with the local Rotary Club providing Breakfast for competitors on Saturday Morning, Lunch will be provided by Greethorpe Public School and the post event dinner and presentation will be at the Cowra Services Club, a long time supporter of AMSAG events in Cowra. All of these meals will be included in the entry fee. The event supp regs will be release s shortly, keep an eye out on the AMSAG website for more details.
